Exterra Termite Systems: Why Correct Installation and Maintenance Matter
At Zone Pest, we’ve recently assisted several homeowners across the Northern Rivers who have had Exterra Termite Management Systems installed around their properties. Many were seeking a second opinion or independent review of their existing setups,
and in some cases, what we discovered was concerning.
What We Have Found
During our free site consultations, we noticed major issues with the installation and maintenance of some Exterra systems, including:
Bait stations placed too far apart—some with gaps exceeding 5 metres
Missing brown caps that are essential for correct station function
Absence of timber interceptors, or use of non-compliant materials not supplied by Exterra
Termite activity present inside stations, but no bait having been applied
In one unfortunate case, a client’s home was attacked by termites despite having an Exterra system installed. Timber within one of the stations had clearly intercepted termite activity, yet no bait had ever been added. As a result, a large termite nest had likely been allowed to develop inside the home.
These Systems Work - If They’re Managed Properly
Exterra is a proven and trusted termite management system, but like any system, it’s only as effective as the team that installs and manages it. Correct spacing, timely inspections, and appropriate application of bait are essential for the system to do its job—protect your home.
When these steps are skipped or done incorrectly, termites can continue to thrive undetected, putting your property at serious risk of damage.
At Zone Pest, we follow Exterra’s strict guidelines for both installation and ongoing maintenance. We:
Ensure correct station placement with no excessive gaps
Use only approved Exterra timber interceptors
Apply bait as soon as termite activity is confirmed
Provide thorough internal and external inspections at every visit
Document our process with photos or video for full transparency
Our standards go above and beyond what many other providers offer because we understand that termite protection is too important to cut corners on.
Our Commitment to Quality
How You Can Protect Yourself From Failed Termite Management
If you already have an Exterra system installed, ask your current provider:
Are you using Exterra-approved interceptor timber?
Can you show me images or video of my bait stations from your last visit?
When was bait last applied—and why?
Getting clear answers to these questions is vital for your peace of mind.
