Cockroach Pest Control for the Tweed Coast & Northern Rivers
Cockroaches in Your Home or Business?
Cockroaches are one of those pests you don't want to ignore. Seeing one occasionally may not seem like a major problem, but cockroaches are excellent at hiding and a small number of visible insects can sometimes be an indication of considerably more activity out of sight.
Across the Tweed Coast and Northern Rivers, homes and businesses can encounter several different cockroach species, including German, Australian, American and Brown-Banded cockroaches. Different species have different habits, which is why correctly identifying where they are living and what is contributing to the problem is an important part of effective cockroach control.
At Zone Pest, we don't simply treat the cockroaches you can see. We take the time to investigate the areas
where they may be harbouring, breeding and travelling.
From kitchens and bathrooms to appliances, cupboards, wall cavities, roof voids and other hidden areas, our aim is to find the source of the problem and provide practical, targeted cockroach control for your property.
Why Cockroaches Are a Common Problem in the Tweed & Northern Rivers
Warm, Humid Conditions Make Our Region Ideal for Cockroaches
Living in the Northern Rivers and Tweed Coast means enjoying a warm, subtropical climate. Unfortunately, cockroaches tend to enjoy those conditions too.
Warmth, moisture, shelter and readily available food can provide ideal conditions for cockroaches around residential and commercial properties.
Kitchens are an obvious hotspot, but cockroach activity isn't always sitting somewhere easily visible.
Some of the areas we regularly pay attention to include:
Behind and underneath dishwashers
Under sinks and around plumbing
Drains and waste pipes
Cupboard hinges and hidden voids behind cabinetry
Cracks and crevices inside kitchen cupboards
Oven housings
Refrigerators and other kitchen appliances
Coffee machines
Toasters and knife blocks
Washing machines
Electrical conduits
Wall cavities
Skirting boards and wardrobes
Roof voids and subfloors
Damp, protected areas around the exterior of the property
German cockroaches are particularly troublesome because they favour warm, protected locations close to food and water and can establish themselves inside cupboards, drawers and electrical appliances.
Larger cockroach species may also be associated with outdoor environments, drains, vegetation and other protected areas
before making their way into buildings.
The important thing is to determine what type of cockroach we're dealing with and where the activity is coming from,
rather than assuming every cockroach problem is the same.
Cockroach Facts & Myths
How Much Do You Really Know About Cockroaches?
They may not be anyone's favourite house guest, but cockroaches are pretty remarkable insects. Here are a few facts, and a few myths worth clearing up.
MYTH: If My House Is Clean, I Can't Get Cockroaches
Not necessarily.
Keeping your home clean certainly helps by reducing available food and harbourage, but cockroaches can still enter well-maintained properties.
They can find food in tiny crumbs and residues and may find moisture around plumbing, drains and appliances. Some cockroaches can
also be introduced into a property in boxes, packaging or other items.
FACT: Cockroaches Are Excellent at Hiding
Absolutely.
Cockroaches generally prefer dark, protected areas and can squeeze into cracks, gaps, cupboards, appliances and
other spaces where you may rarely look.
That's one reason the cockroach you see isn't necessarily the whole problem.
MYTH: Seeing One Cockroach Means There Is Only One
We wouldn't count on it.
An occasional larger cockroach may simply have wandered inside, but repeated sightings, particularly of
smaller cockroaches in kitchens, deserve closer attention.
FACT: German Cockroaches Can Breed Very Quickly
Unfortunately, yes.
German cockroaches are among the most prolific pest cockroaches. Their ability to reproduce quickly is one reason an
infestation can become difficult to manage when left untreated.
MYTH: A Can of Supermarket Spray Will Fix the Problem
It might kill the cockroach you're looking at.
That doesn't necessarily mean you've controlled the infestation.
Effective cockroach management is about identifying the species, locating harbourages and targeting the
areas where cockroaches are living and breeding rather than relying only on killing visible insects.
FACT: There Are Hundreds of Cockroach Species in Australia
And most aren't interested in taking over your kitchen.
Australia has hundreds of cockroach species and only a relatively small number are regarded as significant household pests.
So cockroaches aren't all bad — we'd just prefer the pest species stayed out of your cupboards.
Zone Pest Cockroach Control
Thorough Cockroach Treatments That Look Beyond the Obvious
Cockroaches can be persistent, particularly when an established infestation has access to food, moisture and protected harbourage.
Zone Pest provides professional cockroach control for homes and businesses throughout the Tweed Coast and Northern Rivers.
Our approach starts by looking at the property and identifying where cockroaches are active and where they are likely to be hiding.
Depending on the property, species and level of activity, treatment may involve a combination of professional pest-management methods including:
Gel Baits
Carefully placed in targeted locations where cockroaches are likely to feed and travel.
Cockroach Bait Stations
Used in suitable locations to help target activity while keeping treatments contained.
Crack and Crevice Treatments
Attention is given to the little gaps and protected areas cockroaches use as harbourage.
Dust Treatments
Professional pest-control dusts can be applied to appropriate inaccessible areas and voids where required.
Targeted Aerosol Treatments
Used where appropriate to treat specific areas of cockroach activity.
Internal and External Pest Treatments
Depending on the cockroach species and circumstances, we may need to look beyond the kitchen and investigate other
areas of the building and surrounding property.
Inspection of Hidden Areas
Cockroaches don't always make their home somewhere convenient. Where appropriate, we can investigate wall cavities and other difficult-to-access areas, with inspection technology available to assist us where conditions warrant it.
Most importantly, we take our time.
Cockroach control isn't about racing through a property and spraying the areas everyone can see. It's about understanding where the activity is coming from and treating the areas that are most likely to be contributing to the problem.
We can also provide practical advice about food storage, moisture, cleaning, entry points and other conditions around the property
that may help reduce future cockroach activity.

Cockroach Pest Control Frequently Asked Questions
-
Cockroach activity can increase when conditions provide warmth, moisture, food and shelter. Weather can also influence activity, while some species may be accidentally introduced into a property through boxes, appliances and other transported items.
-
Common hiding places include underneath sinks, behind dishwashers and refrigerators, inside cupboard hinges and cracks, around appliances, plumbing penetrations, drains, wall cavities and other dark, protected areas.
-
Kitchens provide almost everything cockroaches need: warmth, food, water and plenty of hiding places. German cockroaches in particular are commonly associated with kitchens, cupboards and electrical appliances.
-
Not automatically, but regular daytime sightings can be worth investigating. Many pest cockroaches are primarily active at night, so frequent activity during daylight may indicate there are more cockroaches hiding nearby.
-
DIY products may kill individual cockroaches, but established infestations can be much harder to eliminate because cockroaches hide and breed in areas that are difficult to access. Professional treatment allows the property to be inspected and treatment targeted to likely harbourage areas.
-
Killing the cockroaches you can see doesn't necessarily reach those hiding elsewhere. Eggs, young cockroaches and adults may remain protected inside cracks, appliances, cupboards or cavities, allowing activity to continue.
-
Several pest species can occur in Australian properties, including German, American, Australian and Brown-Banded cockroaches. Correct identification can be important because their preferred habitats and behaviour differ.
-
Keep food sealed, clean spills and crumbs, regularly clean underneath appliances, empty rubbish, avoid leaving pet food out unnecessarily, repair leaking taps and plumbing, reduce clutter and seal obvious gaps around the building where practical.
Professional pest management can then form part of an ongoing preventative approach.
